Feeding both mind and body, we help Kotebe's neediest families

Government schools in Ethiopia are free; however, food, uniforms and school supplies are not provided. Food is the critical issue. Children whose families cannot afford to feed them do not attend school. They live their lives begging in the streets of Addis Ababa.

All of the students at Fresh and Green Academy come from impoverished households, and all but a few have only one parent -- their mother. These families live in conditions that are unimaginable for most Westerners: no water, plumbing or electricity. Single-room shacks with dirt floors often house up to ten people.

The Muday Association has become a surrogate "extended family" for all of its students and their moms. Through the school, the kids receive three nutritious meals each day and a well-rounded education. The curriculum includes all classes mandated by the Ethiopian Department of Education, as well as classes in music, art, dance and (hopefully soon) computer literacy.

Muday also sponsors a Mother's Cooperative where students' mothers make scarves, jewelry, baskets, shoes and ceramic goods. The sale of these items enable the mothers to earn a living and keeps them from returning to a life of prostitution. Muday also provides classes in hygiene, nutrition and other life skills as well as feeding the moms on the days that the Cooperative meets.

In addition, the Muday Association has also taken on the task of providing food, housing and education for children whose parents have either passed away or are no longer able to care for them. Among this group of special children is Yesuneh, a severely disabled four-year-old.

Ethiopia has few "safety nets" for its disenfranchised. The impoverished people of Kotebe have come to rely on The Muday Association for many things. From caring for a disabled child to covering the costs of a family's funeral, The Muday Associatiion somehow manages to help.

We are only able to do this through the generosity of our donors. Thank you for all you have done and are doing to ensure the well-being of our students and families.
